Ecuador will decree the expansion of the protection zone of the Galapagos marine reserve

The Galapagos Marine Reserve will be expanded from this Friday, by 60,000 square kilometers, which are added to the existing reserves of the protection zone. This fact will become official during the visit of the President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, to the Enchanted Islands.

With this action, the announcement made by the president, last November 2021, in Glasgow, United Kingdom, during the climate summit called COP26, will be finalized.

The presidential day in Galapagos will begin on Thursday, January 13, indicated the Secretary of Communication. After his arrival in the insular province, the President will participate in the event «Let’s meet for the Environment.» Here he will dialogue with citizens linked to environmental protection, to analyze the importance of marine conservation for the country and the world.

In addition, President Lasso is expected to give an interview on the actions and public policies undertaken by his government to contribute to the protection of the planet and its biodiversity.

On Friday, January 14, from the Sierra Negra ship, in Puerto Ayora Bay, the President will sign the Executive Decree that formalizes the expansion of the Galapagos Marine Reserve. In the act of signing the decree, the following will participate as honorary witnesses: the president of Colombia, Iván Duque, and the former president of the United States, Bill Clinton. The foreign ministers of Costa Rica and Panama will also be present, and some foreign ambassadors will attend.
