Six Ecuadorian Provinces Covered With Ash After Uptick in Sangay Volcano’s Activity

According to the country’s authorities, so far no human damage has been reported due to volcanic activity.

The National Service for Risk and Emergency Management (Sngre) of Ecuador reported on the intensification of the activity of the Sangay volcano, located south of the Morona Santiago province, in the center of the country.

According to Sngre, the Sangay began to register tremors and ash ejections at 04:20, local time, this Sunday. The column of smoke and dust emitted has affected localities in at least six provinces of the country.

Authorities from several Ecuadorian ministries deployed work teams on Monday to assess the damage in the affected areas. Groups from the Public Health, Housing and Agriculture portfolios will cooperate in the work.

«As a result of the activity of the Sangay volcano, emissions of gas and ash columns have been observed between 800 and 2,000 meters above the crater level,» said the general director of Sngre, Rommel Salazar.
