Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Valencia said that 68,708 people live in Ecuador as refugees, of which 97% are Colombians and 3% are from other nationalities.
“Our challenge is to find strategic partners that support the Ecuadorian State in its commitment to promote lasting solutions in terms of integration, determination of refugee status, registration of people in need of international protection, and contingency plans,” Valencia said.
The Minister also explained that 80% of the requests for refuge that Ecuador receives are from Venezuelan citizens. He informed that “the number of Venezuelan citizens who have been granted refugee status between January and November 2019 is 28 times higher than in 2018.
Valencia explained that Ecuador works to ensure full respect for the rights of refugees, who benefit from universal access to health and education; their right to work and to perform any legal economic activity, which allows them to integrate locally as productive members of their host communities.
