«Inocencio Tucumbi» seeks truth and justice for strike victims

They criticized the State for denying the excessive use of force against protesters.

The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) announced the founding of the National Association of Strike Victims “Inocencio Tucumbi,” with the aim of showing “the serious human rights violations as part of state repression during protests in Ecuador.”

They explained that this association is a space for authorities to investigate violent deaths during the October protests. «The truth is the first step towards justice,» they said.

Inocencio Tucumbi was the first person who died during the protests. “His death is a consequence of police abuse during an attack on a peace zone. However, the State insists that he «fell» while he was trying to climb a house. His death will be a symbol of resistance and tenacity in the search for truth.»

As an association, they demand to know the truth. “Who ordered and executed the mass, arbitrary and indiscriminate detentions? Which was the intelligence and counterintelligence work? Follow-up actions against social leaders, diplomatic notes with other States,» among other issues.
