«Indigenous peoples are not included in the vaccination plan,» claims Leonidas Iza

The leader of the Indigenous and Peasant Movement of Cotopaxi (MICC), Leonidas Iza, claimed to the Ministry of Health that his communities are not part of the vaccination plan carried out by the National Government.

«There are no vaccines for the first line, nor for those who fight against COVID-19,» Iza detailed this February 23, 2021, through his Twitter account.

It is not the first questioning of the vaccination plan. Since its inception, it was marked by complaints of irregularities: the announced doses did not arrive, administrative personnel benefited from the doses, the mother of the Minister of Health, Juan Carlos Zevallos, received the vaccine, without being on the list, among others.

Due to these irregularities, several institutions such as the National Assembly, the CPCCS and the Ombudsman’s Office called for the official’s dismissal. The Legislative also led to two political trials against Zevallos.

On January 21, the plan began, in its phase 0, with the application of 8.000 vaccines. By February 17, a second batch of vaccines arrived with more than 16.000 doses. Doctors from intensive care and from other areas who care for patients with COVID-19 claimed that they are not part of the second list of beneficiaries.

«Who is a priority?» Iza claimed in his publication, questioning that administrative personnel and those from other areas receive the doses, despite the fact that they are not part of the first line. «The improvisation of the minister continues to be a risk to the lives of Ecuadorians,» added the indigenous leader.
