Argentine government enacts abortion law

«I have kept my word, today we have a better society, today we have a more egalitarian society,» commented Argentine President Alberto Fernández.

This Thursday, January 15, 2021, the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, signed the decree that promulgates the abortion law. With this new law, according to the president, it will be possible to start creating «a more just and egalitarian society.»

Fernández was accompanied by other authorities and representatives of feminist groups. The president commented that the law of voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVE) will help to guarantee the health that «clandestinity does not achieve.»

«I have kept my word, today we have a better society, today we have a more egalitarian society, today we begin to write another story, that of seeking more rights where imbalances still exist,» commented the current Argentine president.

The abortion law allows women to terminate their pregnancy voluntarily until the 14th week of pregnancy. The State must guarantee that it is legal, safe and free.

The legal framework also allows doctors to make a conscientious objection and not perform the abortion, however, the doctor must refer the patient to other professionals who do.
