Members of the National Electoral Council of Ecuador warn of death threats against them

The case was reported to the Prosecutor’s Office.

The Prosecutor’s Office is already aware of the death threats against the five members of the National Electoral Council (CNE).

In a statement, the CNE rejected this type of act, which it described as cowardly because it would attempt to intimidate under threat to influence the decision-making of the electoral authorities in the registration and qualification phase of the candidacies.

The agency indicated that the threats had been received through an institutional email against President Diana Atamaint; the vice president, Enrique Pita; and the counselors José Cabrera Zurita, Luis Verdesoto and Esthela Acero, for which reason it was necessary to request the intervention of the Public Prosecutor’s Office to carry out the investigations of the case.

«There has never been and will never be any intention to favor or harm any political party or movement, since the decisions of this collegiate body are governed by the Constitution and the Code of Democracy,» says a part of the electoral council statement.

The CNE called on citizens and political organizations to be vigilant so that no violent act tarnishes the electoral process.

At the moment, the institution is processing the challenges against the UNES, CREO and Libertad es Pueblo binomials.
