President of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno said: ‘I reject violence against women in all forms’.
In a speech to investors, in Guayaquil city of, Lenin Moreno said «men were under threat of being denounced for harassment and added, “at times, with harassment, they torment ugly people»
“That is to say, that the harassment is when it comes from an ugly person,” he added. “But if the person looks good according to the standards, they tend not to think necessarily that it is harassment.”
That prompted immediate outrage from women’s rights activists and others.
10 days ago, the Minister of Government, María Paula Romo, described violence against women in Ecuador as a “pandemic”.
Statistics show that six out of 10 women have suffered some type of violence.
Lenín Moreno ordered the 84% cut in equality policies and the fight against sexist violence. In 2020, the government allocated $ 876,862 for the eradication of violence. In previous years the budget allocation was 5.4 million dollars.
The Ministry of Health reported that it takes about $ 500 million to work in prevention regarding sexual and reproductive health in the country. (C.D.A.)
